The power of sports

SFpic“Before I followed Christ,” says a sports ministry leader in Ethiopia, “I was a gang leader involved in every kind of violence and trouble. My life first began to change when a Sports Friends leader became my soccer coach. He loved me and told me about Jesus… Many of my former gang members are playing soccer and volleyball with me and are coming to church. God is changing their lives!”

Sports Friends coaches are serving in some of the least reached and most persecuted places around the world.  God is using these individuals powerfully.  (Click on the map link below to see where and how many).

Today’s youth face many struggles, with issues of religious and cultural identity, drugs, alcohol, sexuality, gangs, poverty, broken homes, internet gaming and more.   Of Africa’s one billion people, 70% are under 25 years. From one side of the continent to the other, from north to south, sport is a passion and football is played by kids with plastic-bag balls in the dust of thousands of village streets. In Asia and South America it’s a similar story. Sports are a powerful tool, a magnet. Meeting them where they are, the coaches from local churches trained by Sports Friends mentor youngsters to share God’s love with young people, their families and their communities.
