Resilience in the aftermath of disaster
September-2023

One of our mission partners mentors the Love In Action project which operates in a country highly susceptible to natural disasters. Flooding and landslides due to monsoon rains are common during this season, and thousands are left homeless, injured, lose loved ones, homes, livestock and livelihoods due to this every year — something Kiwis can increasingly identify with.

We support local partners on the ground who work with their local communities and churches to assess impact, provide emergency food, hygiene, shelter relief, counselling and followup training in disaster preparedness and resilience.

Depending on the situation, some assistance also may be provided for rebuilds (damaged toilets, water systems, simple homes), or to provide livelihood items or school supplies with one-off replacement.

Bhim, a subsistence farmer, was devastated when flooding swept away his family home. He was thankful that his family members all survived, but there was overwhelming anxiety: how would they survive the coming year? All they had left was the clothes they were wearing and a few household items they were able to dig out of the mud left behind by the flood. The seeds he had been preparing to plant soon for the upcoming year’s crops and the chickens they relied on for their livelihood were all gone.

Within 24 hours, local partners arrived, working together with local government people to assess situation and need. A one-month supply of food, hygiene items and an emergency tarpaulin for shelter was provided to all affected households. Items were put into household packages by volunteers from local church. Bhim also received seeds to plant so his family would be able to grow food to eat in the coming months. Recovery will take time and hard work, but with the emergency relief and livelihood support provided, Bhim is encouraged and confident his family will be able to survive.

This natural disaster destroyed many homes and some people died; the children were experiencing a lot of emotional trauma, anxiety, fear and stress. Love in Action provided trauma counselling and therapy to the children in the area. This gave them a safe and supportive place to express their fears, helped them process and work through their emotions and develop coping strategies. When parents and teachers saw improvement in the children following the counselling sessions, they began using some of the strategies themselves. At a time when people are looking for big answers, the local church which this project supports is able to share not only material assistance but also to demonstrate the gospel in action.

Pray: that Love in Action will continue to get the funds to step in when disaster strikes these poor families in rural areas
