December 2016 UPDATE: The on-going rebuilding of lives…
Since the 7.8 earthquake struck the coast in April, 2016, the area has continued to experience aftershocks.
SIM Ecuador has remained active in the region. For example, in the village of Coaque and nearby city of Pedernales a team has gone to work with the women affected by the trauma of the earthquake. The leaders were excited by what they had learned in a trauma healing training in September and wished for it to be used by the Lord for people to bring their pain to Him and experience healing.
Local women came and explored some practical ways to process traumatic events and heard the great news that we have a God who cares. The women were reserved but also brave in sharing their thoughts with the group. The session on exploring how we can help children got a lot of frank discussion in the small groups and sharing that with the rest of the women. Yolanda, a believing community leader, shared different needs of the community and how she could see how people needed God’s transforming power in their lives. In Pedernales, the women of the church gathered for two afternoons to explore the same topics. It was good to help the children think about being able to talk to their parents and other adults they trust about hard things they have experienced and to bring their worries to the cross of Jesus because he cares for them.
“As we continue to develop both the women’s and children’s outreach, we will also be working to connect the men of this area with trauma healing as well in order to assist this community to heal as a whole and encounter the love of Christ.” – Karine Woldhuis of SIM Ecuador.
